Marbles and Sweets

Art: Lisa D'Cruz, 5, India

A boy and a girl were good friends. They always played together.
The boy had a collection of marbles.
He had tiny marbles, shiny marbles, big marbles, and a rainbow-coloured marble. He loved the rainbow-coloured marble the most. It was as big as his fist.
The girl had some sweets.
She had marshmallows, jelly beans, sugar candy, and a heart-shaped chocolate. She loved the heart-shaped chocolate the most. It had a golden wrapping.

The boy said to the girl, “I will give you all my marbles if you give me all your sweets.”

The girl thought for a moment. She was happy to play with the boy’s marble collection in exchange for her sweets. She said, “Alright. Let us exchange them.”

The boy gave her all the marbles except the big rainbow-coloured one. He hid it in his pocket.
The girl gave him all her sweets as she had promised.
That day the girl played with the marbles. When night came, she slept peacefully.
The boy happily ate some sweets.
But he couldn’t sleep at night.
He kept tossing and turning.
He kept wondering whether the girl had hidden the best sweet from him.
